Re: Gold Duck MIA for 5 days--any word?

Duck report (QWAK):36_1_63:

Was able to get through to the Duck on the phone this morning.

He is still without power. Sounded rather tired, but was in good spirits. He says it has been a good test of his gear, but has had numerous things go wrong on him. The generator completely bit the dust a few hours after he reported on here he had patched it up.

To his horror he also found that an inverter he had to run a number of deep cell batteries also failed to work. He has had it for sometime, he said. He has taken it to bits and can't find anything obviously wrong with it, but nonetheless it does not want to play. The Duck Pond is down now, as he can't not run the small pump on his woodfired system to it. He is using water from the Duck Pond to flush the loo.

He still has lots of stored (fresh) water. He had been experimenting with eating various MRE's but has moved on to steak and other luxuries as by now his deep freeze is thawing out. He reports that the cat and dog, who are also eating steak, are pleased with this arrangement.

He said to tell you all to remember with your kerosene lamps to keep checking them and adjusting the flame lower as they warm up, he overlooked this one night and blew the chimney up on his. He is very down on little rechargable lights from China at the moment. Verdict - useless.

He was able to move all the fallen branches from his driveway with a hand saw - he said he was scared to use the chain saw as the conditions were so slippery. Like the good Duck he is, he has been out and about checking on neighbours and taking boxes of preps to ones having difficulty.

His power has been out 8 days now, he said that is his previous record. He has no estimate when he will get it restored. Feels it could be another week or more.

He basically seems fine and says he can hardly wait to post about it all. He is trying to get another inverter at the moment.

So the Duck is getting by, and keeping positive.:ok::shine:

He plans to give us all a good briefing on his experiences when he gets back on line. It will no doubt be very helpful.

Avalon, I relayed to him that people were wondering about him. If he can get another inverter he thinks he might be able to get back on line, even if the power is still off. Though he said he thinks his area is bottom 5% in the priority line to get power back up, so he may go a full three weeks off grid.

I have told him that if he can't post in a few days time I will call him again and update everyone here. He has unearthed a splendid old phone that makes a noise like an old fashioned British pay phone when he dials it. He demonstrated it for me, it was great! Ha, ha, ha!

Duck's neighbours are lucky to have him. He is far too busy of thinking of others, including the pets, to be feeling sorry for himself.

Thanks Maxine,
I'm glad he is ok.
If you talk to him again, let him know he is in our thoughts and prayers,
and could you please ask him to keep a Journal?
It would be a very valuable thing for many of us.
Not neccessarily just a log book of events but also how emotions played on
him and the decisions he made.

Thanks.

EDIT: I see you posted above while I was typing my post.

He has talked a lot, and I will keep notes.

The Duck is dyslexic, why he writes like he does, he keeps the notes in his head. He is very clear thinking and logical to talk to, he also has a lot of technical ability and knowledge.

Re emotions he said that in part it was great not to have the day to day distractions, the net, the phone, the TV. He said it gave him a lot of time to contemplate and meditate and think up new solutions to some of his equipment failures. He has made some impro's, he said some worked, some did not, but without this test he would not have had to think and resort to them.

He said, in true Duck fashion, that 'OH NO, THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING!!!' is not a good approach to all this. He has been trying to talk a few neighbours out of this mindset. He says he is thinking 'Oh YES it is happening, but don't panic, look on the bright side, what can we do?' He said, yes, it is hard work, but he is OK, and trying to just float with the stream and take the bends as they come.

He is still saying it is an adventure, and he sees his mistakes, re gear, but is not moaning.

He is a great Duck. We can all learn from him.

Hey Blueice,

Yes, sorry, I can be rather a gloomy old Goose, and should learn from the Duck to use more smilies.:15_1_70v:

By the way a friend of mine on here, and elsewhere, I know her other than GIM, emailed me and said how do we post photos? I think she meant of cats. She had been looking at the cat thread. She has some very lovely kittens to post.

So could you tell us on the 'Cool cat of the Day' thread, in explicit detail for internet impaired bird brains, (my friend is Raven Dancer - I am also an internet impaired bird brain.) how we do this?

That is a great thread! The cats are VERY cool!

To be honest, using my own bird brain, which BTW is a bad rap, I use a scanner to which I load to the desk top and then apply the attachment feature...

The other way is to up load the picture to a file storage place such as the following: http://imageshack.us/

If you use a digital form you can place those images on a flash drive and then insert it into a USB to load the pictures to your computer..

Say hello from Blueice for me, oh wait just say Blue....

Thank you for the update Maxine!

It's good to know the good Duck is still afloat and hasn't lost too many feathers. It sounds like his neighbors are lucky to have him, too.

The Duck is passing on experiences that we can all take away and use to better prepare, but there is also a big lesson about the importance of a positive attitude under tough circumstances.

Here's wishing you all the best, Duck!

Should not have called the Duck Egg this morning? . . . A jinx? I am sitting now with a tea towel on my head after digging out some of the mess. (Change from tin foil - a tea towel. Very modest!) The freezing rain and gales have started on top of the foot of snow here.

Re: Gold Duck MIA for 5 days--any word?

Let me give this a shot Maxime and see if I can clear this up for you.

There are two ways to post images. The first is to have a account at "image shack" or "photobucket". If you do you can upload images to your account thae you can include them in your post using the BB Code.

Example:

{IMG}http://www.LinkToYourImageAccount/yourphoto.jpg{/IMG}
Be sure to replace the { } brackets above with the [ ] brackets.

That will get you something like this:

http://www.the3006cafe.org/stuff/BunnyBucks.jpg

The other way is to attatch them to the post. After you hit "Reply" you type your message, then scroll down a bit till you see this area.

http://www.the3006cafe.org/stuff/howto1.jpg

Click on "manage attatchments".

A pop up will open that looks like the following.

http://www.the3006cafe.org/stuff/howto2.jpg

Click "Browse" to find the photo on your hard drive. You can add 7 attatchments, just click "Browse" on the right side to find them.

Hope this helps you and any others on How To add photos.

Hope the main QWAK gets back soon.

Three things I can think of that I'm short on in a power outage, that a long term thing like the DUCK is going through right now are:
1. A hand pump on a good well.
2. A wood heat stove that would double as a cook stove.
3. An outhouse.

With properly preserved food stores people would not need the electric company near as much as they do. Of course most towns and cities would not allow any of those. So, those folks would have to improvise. If the grid were to go down and stay, we'd all need to change or die.

The DUCK would find a way!

DUCK ya sure are missed!!!

Dan. Those are really essentials. If nothing else till you outfit yourself with a well, catch rain water.

I have two wells. One has a high salt content hence we had a deeper one put in. I do have a hand pump (plus a spare) for the wells. I figure that I can use the salty well for flushing the toilets with, eliminating the need for a outhouse. Plus I always have rain water here, well except for now when we are in the dry season.

So much to think of. Glad I started years ago.

Toilets don't flush too well when the pipes are broken and/or the sewage is backed up.

mayhem, I have the hand pump and actually had it installed on a well where we used to live, but have not installed it at our new location. A bit of work is in store to do that. Actually, I'd like another well just dedicated to the hand pump. As for the outhouse.... county says no to those, but they can't make you remove one if it's there. As for a wood/cook stove, there are other ways to deal with that, but for now the LP gas kitchen stove would last quite a long time. So, at least some of the bases are covered to some extent. City folks with a nat gas cook stove and stored drinking water would do fine if their water main still worked. (PS. I would not drink the water:wink:) The DUCK seems equipped with exceptional intelligence and should do well and even thrive to some extent. Lots of time to look at the spiritual angle of life.:15_1_70v:

Thanks for the Duck update. Sounds like the Duck all right, checking on neighbors.

I'm surprised he has not found a way to let the weather keep his frozen food frozen.

On urban outhouses -- there is an item made for families with dogs to do sanitary dog poop disposal called a doggie doolie. It comes with digestive enzymes and is kind of a mini septic tank for solid excrement. Having a dog, I put one in, and having an invalid's bedside pottie from caring for an elderly relative, I figure in an emergency we would use that combo. You can get toilet seats that snap on 5 gallon buckets too for an inexpensive pottie chair. Of course, you have to have at least a little yard for that to work. About a square foot. In an apartment I guess residents would need to agree on a trench latrine in the joint grassy area. But I would prefer to have an indoor toilet no matter where the result ends up.

Re: Gold Duck MIA for 5 days--any word?

ky declared major disaster- gov. term $$$. & some areas will be w/o electric up to 6 wks.
0 degrees last night in places; but weather breaks & 50's + next week.
still a few in cities w/o power; but major current outages are rural.

what most don't realize is ky. had it's worst outages ever in sept. 08; now this is the worst.

lotsa practice!

the ice/snow[it is still all around] is tiring when u are not used to it even w/ electricity; so i bet duck is having to get his second wind! Good luck to him!

Fuuny how that works, and then we learn today the food FEMA gave out in that area was part of the peanut butter recall.

AM. The trouble the Duck was having with his food was a couple of days ago the temperature went way up, into the 60's I think he said. Though it was forecast to g cold again. He managed to save some of it at the bottom of the freezer that was still solid by putting it in a neighbour's freezer - but it remains to be seen how long the neighbour's generator lasts either. It sounded a bit iffy.

I saw those doggie things on another site the other day. Do you recommend it, does it work well?

Re: Gold Duck MIA for 5 days--any word?

We bought the multi dog size for 1 dog and use the enzymes, but that said, yes. How it would handle two more mammals' waste remains to be seen. But I hope we don't have to trench.

Slight Duck update.:shine:

I have got about a page of notes here, and will try to give a better update tomorrow.

He is still without power. I did relay to him personal best wishes, etc, from Keef and Avalon. I mentioned some of the rest of you too. He thinks it is very funny that there is a 'MIA' thread going about him, and says that he just is where he is. Just also was trying to fill him in on what he is missing on here, in terms of threads.

He is very amused by the misconception that Keef's post had caused on here that he has a St Bernard with a barrel round its neck. And says he has a mixed breed elderly mutt called 'Little Trouble'.

He said to tell you all that he is OK. That he will be quite glad to get 'back to normal' but that he is OK.

He said that he will know by Sunday night whether or not he will be back on power over the weekend or one of the 5% on his area, who could be looking at a further week and a half to two weeks.

Anyway - the Duck lives!:553:

He said a lot more that I will try to organize and relay tomorrow.

Good luck, Duck Egg, GIM loves you!:23_1_22::553:

The Duck mentioned this on the phone last night. He said that FEMA had turned up in the town nearest to him with 2 semi trailers full of MREs and then did not hand them out due to the container of peanut butter in them being part of the recall. He also said FEMA did not hand out any water.

These guys sound like real heros:sarc:

:shine:

Well, he is not as afloat as he would like to be :bath: being left without a Pond since his inverter did not work. He mentioned that his back was starting to get a bit achy as he has not been able to soak as he normally does.

I forgot to mention yesterday that he said that the main power line that serves his area is damaged and so far the crews have not been able to get to it as it is in a very muddy/boggy spot.

Psychologically he said by the 9/10 day mark he was starting to feel a bit isolated and to suffer from GIM withdrawal. :bear_cry:(He has probably done a lot better than TA would do in such a case, who would likely get the onset of that at more like the 10 hour mark.)

He did mention this which is rather amusing. One of his neighbours caught a what Duck calls 'Razorback Hog' piglet in a live trap. What in Europe is known as a Wild Boar. This piglet is now under the impression that it is a puppy. It is living in the house, it is following one of the kids upstairs at night and sleeping on his bed:biggrin:. Well, that is going to be a bit of a difficult trait to break, I would think, when this thing gets to weigh 2 or 3 hundred pounds. :4_8_4v:Ha, ha, ha!

It sounds like Duck's neighbour has just about out done Avalon in the nutty pet department.:tongue_ma:

Well, I hope they get Duck back on line soon :shine: But I am afraid it sounds like he could be out for a while yet.

It is a good thing he was well prepared, even though he had so many things go wrong. He still seems to be basically doing OK. He said it has been a really good test and he has been making long 'to do' and 'to get' lists.

He said an awful lot else, but they are really 'human interest' stories that should be told in Duck's own style.:shine::4_1_72:

Snakes? I understand there was a snake eating period in the Duck's and his dog's life.

It is now STEAKS!!! Steaks as spelt on the other thread!

Not to imply that he has gone Yuppie, I hardly think so! He has been a very good friend to his neighbours. We would all be lucky if we lived near a Duck.

QWAK,argentos,Yep about 15 years ago  You do what you got to DO to "GET ER DONE" and keep going!:s1:

Found out years later -- should have BREADED and FRIED them snakes -- then they taist just like CHICKEN:yes::111:

The way I tried to cook them -- in a pressure cooker on top the wood stove -- they both TAISTED and ate like RUBBER BANDS with BONES! Even Lonsome Girl gave up on them and SHE used to eat BOX TURTLES!:111::4_1_72::shine:

BTW:I turned that RATTLE SNAKE skin in to my HAT BAND,dried and mounted its head with open mouth and FANGS in front of my hat! Got a Red tail HAWK feather and a tiney GOLD "virgen Mary"statue from my Mom stitched in to the snake skin looking out over the snake head but can't see it in less you look real close. LOL
